2014 Chevrolet SS or fully loaded Chevrolet Impala and $4000? (W/Poll)

Chevrolet will soon have two large sedans in its lineup, and today we learned just how much the rear-drive V-8-powered SS will cost. Enthusiasts everywhere may compare the $44,470 performance sedan to the Dodge Charger SRT8 and Ford Taurus SHO, but what about the newly reinvigorated 2014 Chevrolet Impala? If you were offered a choice between a Chevrolet SS and a loaded Chevrolet Impala with $4000 in the trunk, which would you choose?

Yes, that’s right, we’re comparing (on paper) the front-drive, V-6 Impala with the rear-drive, V-8 SS. The 2014 Chevrolet Impala finished second in a recent five-car full-size sedan comparison. We appreciated the Impala’s “American car” ride but didn’t like how the car’s six-speed automatic transmission hunted for gears on winding roads. Even so, the Impala had good front and rear headroom and we described the car as having “one of the best-looking front ends this side of a Camaro.”

Compared to the 2014 Impala’s 3.6-liter V-6 with 305 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque, the rear-drive SS is powered by a 415-hp 6.2-liter V-8 with 415 lb-ft of torque. The slightly heavier SS also uses a six-speed automatic transmission, and everything from the suspension to the brakes and steering have been tuned with a focus on performance.

The 2014 Chevrolet SS carries a base price of $44,470 (before the gas guzzler tax) and includes a long list of standard equipment with forged 20-inch wheels, steering-wheel-mounted paddles, heated and cooled seats with memory, a rear-view camera, HID headlights, a navigation system, and a color head-up display, a feature not available on the new Impala at any price.

Go for a loaded $41,600 2014 Impala 2LTZ and you’ll get 20-inch wheels, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning, a dual-pane sunroof (a sunroof is $900 on the SS), premium floor mats, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system, and an 11-speaker sound system.

Of course, loaded 2014 Chevrolet Impalas will attract different buyers than the 2014 Chevrolet SS. Even so, if you were given a choice between a new Impala with $4000 in the trunk and a new SS, what would you choose?
