Read article saying they would be limited availability of SS and if 2000 a year were sold it would be successful. This sounds nuts to me anybody else read this.:whatdoyouthink:

Article here said the 2014 allocation would be limited to around 2000. Given we are more then half way through the year and factors such as Holden scaling back their workforce and experiencing high demand for Commodore, that sounds about right to me. Also don't forget the same production line has to make the PPV for US Police forces and Cruze for Australian consumption. There is also some politics being played out around a Federal election here in Australia and GM is trying to strong arm the government for more assistance (cash) so that is all playing out in the background.

I guess there is also the possibility that Chevrolet aren't falling over themselves because of the reception the car got online. Might be some internal politics at play too. Would be a shame if Chev do play politics with the car, as the VF was basically styled for them. I very much doubt it would look like it does if it was only intended for Australian tastes.

Anyway doesn't mean there won't be higher allocations next year if the car is well received. I think Holden is just constrained in what they can produce right now by everything that is going on. Whatever the case, I'm sure if people want one and are prepared to put a deposit down, they will get one. As an owner of a VF SS-V Redline, the nearest we have to your SS, I will say the car is worth the money and the wait. Its a couple of grades above the previous VE in most areas.

This is such BS. GM doesn't want to sell this thing. If they did, the would have offered a manual transmission and different trim levels for a lower entry price. If they offered a stick shift, the would get every Charger/300 RT/ SRT8 sale, and maybe some AMG C63 sales, for those than want a clutch pedal.

Maybe GM knows that once they offer a Alpha chassis car with 400+ HP (ATS-V, 2015 Camaro), no one is going to want a 4,000lb SS "sports sedan" and the SS is just a stop gap for the uneducated that are unaware that Alpha is about the get 400+ HP.

1k,
There was a poll done here a while back, with drivers choosing either manual or auto and guess which one won? Auto.
You have to think in terms of your target audience. The SS is a sports car but it is also a sedan. Sedans are mostly sold to families and most families own automatic. Could GM have launched also with a manual transmission? Maybe. Personally, I think they are just being very wary of what happened to the G8. I think they are "testing the waters." I do foresee a manual tranny in the future for sure, pending the SS initial sales figures. For now, those who truly know what they are getting, will dive into the SS. Those others on shaky ground may follow, or may dive in once a manual is introduced. It is not a deal breaker for all though.

The total production was suppose to be 3300 if this car is successful it will be built on the ATS platform maybe here. The Camaro will be on the ATS the new CTS is on it stretched. The SS is four door sedan, I've waited for since my G8GT was wrecked its for grandkids and wife and my right foot. Oh and I drive a 2012 z06 as my car of choice. Wife has a 2013 2SS Camaro till we get our SS. Yes a manual would be nice for those wanting it but if it gets and new platform in less than 2 years it makes no sense to go to all the trouble of getting it approved my the feds.

I read this morning that we may get even less than 2000 SS'... Honestly I may just wait to see the SS come out on the Alpha platform and get manufactured in NA. I just dont know if this car is going to be worth the hassle of competing to get one, trying to track down which dealer will have one, trying to get the colour I want or waiting for the thing to swim its way here...

With NA production it could at least roll down the same assembly line as ATS or Camaro and maybe just maybe it will be getting a manual. Family or not I want to ROW...

Plus it will keep the wifes hands off my SS... She can barely drive her Escape and she thinks she going to get her hands on my SS... PSHHHH

It does seem like it may be a bit of a hassle trying to actually get your hands on a SS. Maybe that is the way that Chevy wants it. Only those who are most dedicated will actually get one.

If we don't get one of the first 200 or whatever, will they make more at some point later, or is there literally going to only be 2000 (or less) Chevy SS's up for grabs?

Last I heard from MY local dealer, they have a Red one (for the dealership?) and a black one that no one has dibs on yet, heading to them (eventually?).

As has been stated by Mike Deveraux who heads Holden. The Chevrolet SS is built to oreder which should mean exactly that. If you order one, Holden will build it to the colour of your choosing (I am thinking Chevrolet are the main reason for limiting the colour).
He said if They get orders for 1000 that's what they'll build. If it is 15000 then that's what they'll build. I will lay odds on the the second model year will be made available to more dealers once Holdens home market catches up with demand.

The first boat will hold about 900 to 1000 SS sedans and they have alreay said a second load at similar numbers will leave before the end of the year. Launching an d selling this in the dead of winter is a bit of a negative but come Spring/Summer next year I think you will see more volume.

If demand creeps up to say even 10k/ annum its a good bet that Chevrolet will shift the production of SS stateside. Maybe not next year but definitely for the redesign riding on the Alpha.

Another thing to consider is if SS shifts to stateside production in greater volumes its more likely we get an SS Manual.. Figure if 10% of all drivers opt for manual that ~10% of cars should be produced Manual. 2000 SS production run would need 200 Manual cars. For such a small production run that chunk of 200 is HUGE compared to the over all volume of vehicles being produced. Its just not viable from a business point of view to produce a standard SS.

Because even if 10% of all drivers choose stick, how many are SS shoppers?

I think there will be a very high chance of us getting a manual with the Alpha SS, if there's anything they can learn off the current SS , it's that people really want a manual
