One Day, 1009 Miles, Expectations Exceeded

I did my first long trip on the SS yesterday, that took me through six States (including my own): IL, IN, OH, WV, VA, NC.

I'm still in the extended break-in period, and (mostly) held it to 68mpg where speed limits permitted. IIRC, those are either WV or VA mountains off in the distance. The car, quite simply, is an excellent road trip car. It wanted badly to be driven much more vigorously than I was giving it. While I wouldn't say I was "refreshed" at the end of the day, neither was I feeling any ill effects from poor seat support or other issues I've had with our other vehicles on longer trips.

While I didn't buy the SS to save gas, I was blown away with the mileage I've been getting. Note that I have a quarter tank of gas left, so that's the average for that tank. I had actually been up around 26.2 until I hit the mountains. My fuel app shows a calculated avg. of 25.2 for the trip, so the computer's not too far off.

And that, folks, is what 1009 miles of dead bugs looks like.

Looking at your vehicle selections.... The 8N is the only possible intersection of what we may sit on or in. Interesting to see you in an SS. Pretty cool.

This car is an awesome road trip car. Comfy, fun, roomy, and pulls are good even in 6th. I'm so glad that 1. I Have a clear bra for those bugs and 2. Had my first road trip in the winter.

I have no idea how to keep this car at 68, But I'm past my break in period. Great post!

Very nice! Were you using cruise control in the mountains? I've generally found that cruise control is horrible for mpg, especially in the hills. Driving like you were towing a heavy trailer really improves mpg. Build speed going down, bleed it off going up, but of course within reasonable limits.

Pretty sure all the bugs also help mpg too. Kinda like the dimples on a golf ball... right?

Your gas mileage is impressive. I had simialar highway mpg numbers in the first drive home too but then it hasn't seen above 21 since on the highway.

I've never seen above 15mpg... I'm not sure how you do it. This car is horrible on fuel, I don't care.
It is a great driver in every other way though.

Same here! My lifetime mpg over 2k miles is 15.9, but I'm not easy on the "go" pedal, and highway cruising speed around So CA is either stop/go or 85mph+.

Those are current vehicles. First car was a '71 Vega that I eventually put a Buick 3.8 in. Later had a '66 Tempest four-door with a dead OHC6 that got replaced with a built up 350 - was a hoot to drive because it looked like a grandma car, but surprised a lot of folks. I guess the SS is its spiritual successor!

I've had a pretty eclectic range of vehicles over the years....

Well Sunday I made a 500 mile trip that included md, va, nc, and tn. I was not being very good, and my average was 18.4 mpg. If it weren't for some steady cruising on Rt81 it would be lower. We had the windows down since was 78 degrees most of the day. That might hurt it a little. One bad thing was merging in over a bridge in Fredericksburg I went full throttle, and an hour later my wife was still complaining that her right ear was still ringing. This car was made to drive. I may sniff around the The Tail of the Dragon today. I hear from the locals that enforcement is up because 4 people died there earlier this year. But even just cruising the area is pleasant. Only saw one G8 and no SS on the trip.
