95 SS Idles and dies/Check engine light questions

I have a 95 impala SS that sputters and dies when idle. It doesn't do it all the time but it has been lately in traffic when coming to stops. I notice it mostly when I give it gas then hit the brake. I can feel the car pull and the rpms sound like they're going up. I'm wondering if it's the IAC?

I have a check engine that comes and goes. I'm sure it has something to do with the issues at hand, will an innova 3123 scanner work on this car? I have a 12 pin OBDI connector but I've been hearing things about how some 95's have the OBDI connections but OBDII wiring?

Third question is the check engine light ALWAYS goes on for sure and stays on when I give the car a hard acceleration. The car pulls there's a clunk sound and it loses power. I have to turn it off and restart it then the gas peddle feels fine again. Any ideas?

I've taken the car to a few mechanics and nonone seems to figure it out. I'm trying to pinpoint and change these things on my own. I appreciate any help thanks forum.

Just a guess, as I am not there, but it sounds like your EGR valve is sticking open / closing slowly. (For dying when slowing down or coming to a stop)

Good Luck.

Garage
But you are also welcome here Ssouto! Maybe there's a current edition SS in your future. Many of us here have owned or still own the '94-'96 edition of the Impala SS.

Just incase the OP comes back, that scanner wont work, it is a glorified paperclip and that style scanner does not work on the advanced OBD1 in the 94-5 b-bodies.

EGR is a common source of trouble on those, but so is horrible ignition neglect by owners. Since the opt is hard to get to and more expensive than most distributor caps it gets neglected till failure where most distributors have caps and rotors changed as a matter of routine maintenance.

IAC is worth cleaning.
Might unplug the electrical connection to the EGR solenoid so it doesn't try to open potentially stick open and see if that changes the symptoms.
Might check to see that there is flow through the opti vent harness too, plugged harness can result in vacuum in the distributor and spark scatter.

I've built a number of LT1's.

They aren't that bad.

The worst thing is the non-keyed crank for the HB.

Pull the water pump to access the opti.

Doesn't take that long.

What usually kills the opti is a weeping water pump.

Easy fix is to tap in a small drain into the weep hole and run a small piece of hose from tap to ... Somewhere else.. :-)

The EGR is vacuum controled on the LT1.

That's my two cents...

Again good luck.

Yes the EGR is vacuum controlled but the vacuum is controlled by an electric solenoid.
